The new Walgreens flagship store in Boston’s Downtown Crossing will soon have something that no other Walgreens in the country has – a partnership with the city where the store is located.
The new 25,000-square-foot Walgreens, which opens Wednesday, is teaming with City Hall to push Mayor Thomas Menino’s Boston Moves initiative, designed to get residents active and healthy.
The Walgreens will soon have a new kiosk promoting a rewards program, that rewards customers with points for going to the company’s website and recording how many steps they’ve taken in a certain time period.
Those steps taken will also be put toward the city’s initiative to help prevent obesity and promote exercise, Boston Moves. That effort is encouraging residents across the city to drop a million pounds of excess weight.
The mega-pharmacy is not your grandmother’s corner drug store. The flagship, opened in the former Borders bookstore at the corner of School and Washington streets, sells beer and booze, sushi and pastries, and frozen yogurt and smoothies. All told, food and beverage comprises 46 percent of the products sold at the flagship store.
One extra the corporation has thrown in – a virtual makeup station. This allows patrons to take a photo of themselves at a kiosk, and then grab whatever makeup they want to try, scan it to the kiosk, and the picture of the customer adorned in their cover-up of choice.
And here are two other firsts for the company: displays dedicated specifically to Starbucks and Lindt products.
