Walgreens is going upscale, with a massive emporium planned for the former Border’s location in Boston’s Downtown Crossing neighborhood.

The 24,000-square-foot, multi-level store, slated for a fall opening, will be a combination drugstore/department/Whole Foods-style grocery store with fresh greens and grazing food for downtown diners.

The Boston store is one of several dozen new "flagship" stores the Deerfield, Ill.-based drugstore chain is planning nationwide. Two flagship stores have already opened – in New York and Chicago.

"These are just special high-profile locations," Walgreen Co. spokesman Michael Polzin said. "We’re going to do something very different than a traditional drugstore."

Details are still being worked out, but the New York and Chicago flagship stores feature sushi bars, fresh foods, a large beauty section and expanded hours.

"Our flagship stores could offer things like ‘eyebrow bars (for eyebrow shaping),’" Polzin said. "The New York store has hairstyling and manicures."

Polzin said the company is considering seeking a wine or beer license for the Boston store, if regulations permit. No specific date has been set for the fall store opening.

The former Borders store is located at the corner of School and Washington streets, across from the Old South Meeting House — just steps from a rival CVS store.
