Massachusetts is moving into cleanup mode a day after Tropical Storm Irene whipped across the region, knocking out power to thousands, flooding roads and forcing evacuations.
The state’s emergency management agency says the state’s utilities were reporting about 372,000 customers without electricity Monday morning. Officials say it could be days before some people are back on line.
Gov. Deval Patrick said 15 teams will spread across Massachusetts on Monday to assess damage. The governor visited the hardest hit area around Greenfield in Franklin County, which got heavy rains.
State police shut down a stretch of Interstate 91 between Sunderland and Greenfield because of fears that the swollen Deerfield River had damaged a bridge.
Officials say 318 people spent the night in the state’s 28 shelters. (AP)
