Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh has announced a $3 million grant from the Obama administration that will help expand apprenticeship opportunities in construction and hospitality.

The award is part of the American Apprenticeship Grant program, intended to assist 394 participants to advance their careers in the construction and hospitality sectors.

The Massachusetts Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development and the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimate jobs in the construction sector will grow by 30 percent in greater Boston between 2012 and 2022. Over the same time period, jobs in the hospitality sector are projected to grow by 20 percent.

“This grant allows us to equip residents with the knowledge and skills needed to gain employment in some of our fastest growing sectors. We want to provide a pipeline to better-paying jobs with benefits. We know the demand exists, and we’re here to provide the connections,” Walsh said in a statement.

The Greater Boston American Apprenticeship Initiative (GBAAI) aims to offer an accelerated path to skilled jobs with several benefits. Participants will have access to training opportunities and college credential programs that could help increase their earnings. The partners intend to increase number of people in underrepresented groups in skilled labor positions.

The mayor’s Office of Workforce Development led the grant application process with Building Pathways, YouthBuild Boston and BEST Corp.

GBAAI education partners include Wentworth Institute of Technology and Bunker Hill Community College, both of which will work to provide supportive programming opportunities.
