Bond Building Construction is leading a $128 million redevelopment project including demolition of the 59-year-old Maria Weston Chapman Middle School in Weymouth and construction of a new 221,000-square-foot building.

The gymnasium of the original school will be retained and renovated, while a new two-story building for nearly 1,500 students in grades 6 through 8 will be built on the site. Groundbreaking took place this month and completion is scheduled for July 2022.

Designed by Cambridge-based HMFH Architects, the structure includes three academic wings located around a centrally-shared dining room, and an administration-auditorium wing including art, music and makerspace areas.

To minimize the effects of construction on the surrounding neighborhood, Medford-based Bond has developed a community notification schedule along with noise mitigation, dust control and traffic management plans. Hill International Inc. is the owner’s project manager.
