Amazon’s plans for a central Massachusetts distribution facility would become one of the largest warehouses ever completed in the U.S.

The e-commerce leader is proposing a 2.85 million square-foot facility at 53 Sturbridge Road in Charlton, with a building footprint spanning nearly 15 acres and approximately 100-foot building height. The development would include parking for 265 trailers, 1,250 cars and 49 loading docks, according to documents submitted to Charlton officials.

Developer Bluewater Bay Development LLC is seeking approval to build the project on three adjacent undeveloped parcels totaling 98 acres and bounded by Route 20, Route 169 and the Capen Hill Nature Sanctuary. Route 20 would be the primary entrance to the facility.

The project would generate an additional 4,000 vehicle trips on weekdays, according to a traffic analysis submitted by Vanasse & Associates.

Preliminary details of the project were presented by developers to Charleton selectmen in April. At the time, developers estimated the project would generate 1,000 full-time jobs.

Amazon has begun debuting a new multistory warehouse design in at least a dozen locations across the U.S., with some of the facilities as large as 3.8 million square feet
