Gov. Charlie Baker on Tuesday named developer Chanda Smart to serve on the MBTA Board, making one of his final appointments as he prepares to leave office on Thursday.

Smart, a Roxbury resident, works as a developer with OnyxGroup Development LLC in Boston and has been a licensed real estate agent since 2016. She previously managed budgets at Harvard Law School and the Guinier Foundation while working as a faculty administrator for the school. She has also held positions at State Street, Serica Technologies, Nanobiosysm, and Archemix Corp.

She’ll replace MBTA board member and JLL life sciences national practice leader Travis McCready as the designated member representing environmental justice populations.

“Chanda Smart has years of professional experience with budgets and project management which will serve her well as a member of the MBTA Board of Directors,” Baker said in a statement.

The Department of Transportation, which announced Smart’s appointment, did not say in a press release why McCready was being replaced after serving on the board since its inception in the fall of 2021. The law creating the board calls for members to serve four-year terms, though three members appointed by the governor serve “terms that are coterminous with the governor.”

Baker will leave office on Thursday when Gov.-elect Maura Healey takes the oath of office.
