Employment in the Boston-Cambridge-Newton metropolitan area climbed 57,900 from July 2014, a 2.2 increase, according to a quarterly report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) on current employment statistics.

Boston experienced employment growth above the national average, which is at 2.1 percent.

The Boston-Cambridge-Newton metropolitan area made up 67 percent of the workforce, with 48,200 new jobs from July 2014 to July 2015, accounting for 83 percent of the area’s growth.

Education and health services, along with professional and business services in the Boston area accounted for nearly half of the employment gain from July 2014 to July 2015, with the education and health services gaining 15,100 jobs. Both the Boston area and the nation grew 2.8 percent rate in this industry. Professional and business services registered the largest over-the-year employment gains in six of the 12 metropolitan areas.
