The owners of the Holiday Inn Express & Suites South Bay are seeking to expand one of their properties.

Holiday Inn Express & Suites South Bay is looking to add 60 guest rooms in a five-story addition to the Dorchester property to expand economy hotel options in Boston.

The project “will provide additional economy lodging options in Boston, in stark contrast to most hotel projects proposed in Boston in recent years,” according to an application filed this week with the Boston Redevelopment Authority.

The addition would be on the north side of the existing hotel on the 0.9-acre former Bickford’s restaurant property at 69 Boston St. Proponents say it would complement a major development proposal by Edens Development to expand the South Bay Center by 10 acres with 475 apartments, a hotel, 12-screen movie theater and additional 113,000 square feet of retail space.

Jiten Hotel Management acquired the property in 1993 and converted it from the Howard Johnson’s brand.

Colliers International is project manager and Boston-based Group One Partners is the architect.
