With the coronavirus pandemic crashing into Massachusetts like a tidal wave, several area banks stepped forward to help cushion the blow to their communities.

Bank of America

As part of $100 million in donations nation-wide, Bank of America made the following donations in Massachusetts:

  • $1 million to the $20 million Boston Resiliency Fund set up by Mayor Marty Walsh to support organizations providing food for children and seniors, technology for remote learning for students and services, such as childcare, to first responders and healthcare workers in Boston.
  • $250,000 to United Way of Massachusetts Bay and theMerrimack Valley.
  • $1 million to support 17 local organizations who are responding to critical needs such as food insecurity, assistance to the homeless population and help for affected individuals and families.

Cape Cod 5

Hyannis-based Cape Cod 5 committed $500,000 to local relief efforts, half of which will be disbursed immediately with donations from its foundation to the following organizations:

  • A total of $125,000 disbursed among 12 local food pantries throughout all the communities the bank serves to address food insecurity
  • $50,000 to the Needy Fund’s Cape & Islands Major Crisis Relief Fund
  • $25,000 to the Community Foundation for Nantucket
  • $25,000 to Martha’s Vineyard Community Services
  • $25,000 to South Shore Community Action Council

East Boston Savings Bank

East Boston Savings Bank donated $100,000 to support a range of unidentified nonprofit organizations providing “essential services” throughout its footprint.

Eastern Bank

Eastern Bank earmarked $3 million in addition to $10 million in already-planned 2020 donations for a range of groups responding to the crisis including:

  • The Boston Foundation COVID-19 Response Fund and Business Equity Fund
  • City of Boston Resiliency Fund
  • Cape Cod Foundation Strategic Emergency Fund
  • Community Foundation of Southeastern Massachusetts SouthCoast Emergency Response Fund
  • Essex County Community Foundation Essex County COVID-19 Response Fund
  • Foundation for MetroWest Emergency Relief Fund
  • The Greater Boston Food Bank, New Hampshire Food Bank, the Merrimack Valley Food Bank and the Rhode Island Community Food Bank
  • Greater Lowell Community Foundation COVID-19 Emergency Response Fund
  • New Hampshire Charitable Foundation Community Crisis Action Fund
  • United Way COVID-19 Family Support Fund
  • 41 community health centers in Gateway Cities Eastern serves

Dedham Savings Bank

Dedham Savings Bank committed to give $25,000 to food banks throughout its footprint.

HarborOne Bank

Brockton-based HarborOne Bank announced $125,000 in donations to the following organizations responding to the outbreak:

Rollstone Bank & Trust

Leominster-based Rollstone Bank & Trust gave $19,000 to a range of recipients in the community: Funds for the city of Leominster will help provide internet access to students so they can continue learning remotely, while the Fitchburg Public Schools will use their grant to provide meals to students and families. Additional funding will also be provided to Montachusett Opportunity Council, Loaves & Fishes, Townsend Ecumenical Outreach and the Gardner Community Action Committee for food as well as personal care and other essential items.

Webster Bank

Waterbury, Connecticut-based Webster Bank donated $100,000 to the Greater Boston Food Bank, the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts and 10 other food banks in its footprint outside of Massachusetts.
