Connecticut’s governor wants the state’s two federally recognized Native American tribes to move their proposed third casino from East Windsor to downtown Hartford.

The $300 million casino, dubbed “Tribal Winds,” was conceived as a way to compete with MGM Resorts International’s new, successful Springfield facility.

Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont has called on the Mashantuket Pequot and the Mohegan tribes, owners of the Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods casinos, to move the operation to Hartford’s XL Center arena, according to the Hartford Courant.

Sports betting would be legalized as part of the deal, with the tribes getting the rights to run sports betting and internet gambling across the entire state.

MGM has threatened suit to stop the East Windsor casino. The aging, state-owned XL Center needs significant upgrades, but lawmakers have been reluctant to approve funding for it.
