Newtonville SquareAustin Street Partners has been selected to redevelop the Austin Street parking lot, Newton Mayor Setti Warren announced.

The city received six responses from developers to redevelop the city-owned property near Newtonville station on the MBTA commuter rail.

In February, the city issued a request for proposals to redevelop the 74,000-square-foot lot with at least 18 housing units, a minimum of 5,000 square feet of commercial space and at least 85 public parking spaces.

In its submission, Austin Street Partners proposed up to six restaurants and stores, 80 new apartments including 20 affordable units and improved pedestrian access on surrounding streets.

"Colorful specialty pavers, new outdoor lighting, a whimsical fountain and sculpture as well as traffic calming measures will make this a favorite place," the development team wrote in its proposal.

Warren will enter negotiations with Austin Street Partners on a land disposition agreement, according to a press release issued by the city.

Austin Street Partners is a joint venture by Oaktree Development of Cambridge and Dinosaur Capital Partners LLC of Boston.

The city’s goals for the project include providing a gathering spot for local activities, adding housing, enhancing local activities and aiding the adjacent business district. The proposal will be subject to the special permit process approved by the board of aldermen.
