The owner of a construction company based in Dracut is facing federal tax fraud charges.

James Enwright, 53, was charged with one count of tax evasion and one count of failure to pay taxes that allegedly cost the federal government $1.02 million.

Enwright, owner of Enwright Construction, has agreed to plead guilty, U.S. Attorney Andrew Lelling’s office said in a statement.

Lelling’s office claims Enwright hid $2.8 million of his company’s gross receipts from his tax preparer between 2013 and 2018 and paid $3 million in wages to his employees in cash, under the table, between spring 2013 and summer 2019. The result, prosecutors say, was that Enwright underreported his personal income tax obligations and failed to report and pay the IRS the employment taxes owed on the cash wages.

Enwright faces up to five years in prison, three years of supervised release and a fine of up to $2.04 million if convicted.
