Two years after the city of Cambridge banned the sale of non-rescue animals at pet stores, prompting the departure of Petco in East Cambridge, a developer has leased 4,000 square feet to a growing pet retail chain.

Loyal Companion will occupy 95 First St., part of the $275 million First Street Corridor mixed-use development by Cambridge-based Urban Spaces. It’s the first retail tenant to commit to the development, which includes 45,000 square feet of retail space along with 250 apartments and 50,000 square feet of office space leased to CarGurus.

Petco decided not to renew its lease at Urban Spaces’ 119 First St. after the Cambridge city council banned the retail sale of commercially-bred animals. Loyal Companion, which does not sell pets, is a purveyor of food and supplies and offers on-premise grooming, training, day care and pet washing services.

Designed by Perkins Eastman, the single-story 95 First St. contains 10,000 square feet of retail space scheduled to open this spring. Conviser Property Group represents Urban Spaces in leasing.

Loyal Companion is part of the Independent Pet Partners chain which operates 162 stores in the U.S.
