Colonies of Italian honeybees are making a home at Somerville’s Assembly Row and Wellesley’s Linden Square as part of developer Federal Realty Investment Trust’s new partnership with beekeeping researchers.

Honey produced by the rooftop hives will be incorporated into menus at local eateries, according to Federal Realty Investment Trust, owner of Assembly Row and Linden Square. A spokesperson for the firm said the exact restaurants that will receive the honey have not yet been identified.

Founded in 2010, Boston-based Best Bees Co. partners with businesses and homeowners on beehive installations in 12 metro areas and uses them to aid its research into bee population health.

“The addition of the bees to our properties helps show our connection to the community and our support of our partner The Best Bees Co.’s commitment to saving the bee population,” Matt Ehrie, vice president of asset management for Federal Realty Investment Trust, said in a statement.

This story has been updated to reflect that the two restaurants originally named in the announcement have not formally confirmed their plans to use the Best Bees Co. honey.
