A Fort Point office building that served as General Electric’s headquarters when it moved to Boston is being marketed for a potential life science conversion.

Part of the original Boston Wharf Co. portfolio, 33-41 Farnsworth St. includes 18,000-square-foot floor plates and over-14-foot ceiling heights, making it suitable for lab infrastructure, according to JLL Boston which is marketing the 99,068-square-foot building for sale.

In 2016, General Electric leased 60,430 square feet in the building to serve as its temporary headquarters while it was redeveloping a Necco Way warehouse as office space for its permanent home.

Building owners TIAA performed a $1 million lobby renovation, according to marketing materials, and GE did upgrades to its own tenant spaces which served as a temporary home for hundreds of corporate employees.

The property is part of a larger Fort Point office portfolio acquired by TIAA in 2016 for $224 million.

Developers have been eyeing targeting office buildings in Fort Point for potential life science conversions, building on the industry’s recent growth in the Seaport District. Nan Fung Life Sciences Real Estate acquired 51 Sleeper St., a 167,625-square-foot office building, in 2020 for $115 million and is building out speculative lab suites for growing biotech firms. Atalanta Therapeutics signed the first lease under the new ownership this past April.
