A former Revere resident who owned a painting company has been arrested and charged with allegedly filing a fraudulent application to obtain a $2.5 million Paycheck Protection Program loan.

Vinicius Santana, 34, who now lives in Boca Raton, Florida, was charged with one count of wire fraud, according to a statement from the U.S. attorney’s office. Santana was arrested Monday evening at Miami International Airport and appeared in Miami federal court on Tuesday. He will appear in Massachusetts federal court at a later date, the statement said.

According to the charging documents, Santana, who owned the Massachusetts-based painting company Complete Home Care LLC, submitted four different PPP loan applications on behalf of the company. The first three applications allegedly listed five employees and an average monthly payroll between $10,000 and $18,000, the statement said. These applications were denied.

Prosecutors allege that in the fourth PPP application, Santana falsely claimed to have 154 employees and an average monthly payroll of $1 million. Santana’s company received a $2.5 million loan based on the alleged false representations, the statement said. Court documents show that the application was made through Lendio to Northeast Bank.

After receiving the funds, prosecutors allege that Santana misused the loan proceeds to buy cars and invest in cryptocurrency.
