Framingham has chosen Zagster to run a new bicycle sharing service beginning next spring.

The city granted a two-year license for Cambridge-based Zagster to provide a pilot program of its “Pace” service, with 50 bikes available throughout the city.

Pace customers can unlike bikes with a mobile app and drop them off at designated Pace parking racks or public bike racks.

No public funds will contribute to the service, Mayor Yvonne Spicer’s office said. The city is scouting locations for bike racks and seeking private sponsors.

“Bike sharing is an increasingly important part of transportation systems nationwide, offering a healthy, accessible and affordable way to reduce traffic and relieve parking demand,” Spicer said in a statement.

An event will be held at 5 p.m. on Wednesday at Jack’s Abby, 100 Clinton St., to introduce the service.
