General Electric Co. Chief Executive Jeff Immelt said Wednesday that small business demand for credit has begun to pick up after being "nonexistent" in the first quarter.

"Small business demand for commercial lending has grown dramatically," Immelt said in a live interview on CNBC business television.

The head of the largest U.S. conglomerate said he was "encouraged" by the restructuring of the GE Capital finance unit. (Reuters)
