General Electric’s new 12-story, 293,000-square-foot headquarters in Boston will be a “vertical village” containing space for employees and visitors, with enhancements to the Boston Harborwalk and ground-floor space open to the public.

The Fairfield, Connecticut-based conglomerate shared the first details of its plans for the 2.5-acre site on Necco Court in Fort Point in a notification letter to the Boston Redevelopment Authority as it prepares to file detailed plans by Labor Day.

The modern new office tower will be connected to two older warehouses currently owned by Procter & Gamble with a pedestrian bridge and “GE Plaza,” a pedestrian passageway from Necco Street to the Fort Point Channel, according to the letter from Ann Klee, GE’s vice president of global operations for environment, health and safety.

To comply with Massachusetts’ Chapter 91 regulations on waterfront development, 75 percent of the ground-floor space would be set aside for facilities of public accommodation.

Along with offices, the project would include makerspaces, a café, cafeteria, coffee bar, museum, “convener space,” a community co-working space and improvements to the Boston Harborwalk, which runs along the edge of the property.

“A ‘vertical village,’ a glass-enclosed core of activity, will connect GE employees and visitors across floors and teams, and will celebrate GE’s commitment to transparency and collaboration,” Klee stated in the letter.

The designs, being drawn up by the Boston office of Gensler, are consistent with the “100 Acres/South Boston” master plan approved in 2006, Klee wrote.

GE will move approximately 400 employees to a temporary headquarters at 33-41 Farnsworth St. in Fort Point in August before moving to the permanent headquarters in 2018.
