Manufacturing at Gillette Co.’s South Boston campus will relocate to Andover within three years, potentially opening up 31 acres of Seaport District real estate for redevelopment.

Approximately 750 corporate, engineering and R&D jobs will remain in Boston, according to a Boston Globe report, but Gillette has not decided whether to retain any of its existing South Boston campus. All 450 manufacturing jobs would relocate to the company’s Burtt Road campus in Andover.

Procter & Gamble-owned Gillette notified employees today of the decision, which came after several years of facilities planning study that began in 2019 and was delayed by the pandemic.

The razor manufacturer has occupied offices and factory space on the campus near Fort Point Channel for over a century. In the past decade, many of the surface parking lots in the neighborhood have been redeveloped as luxury housing, office towers and life science facilities.

Gillette began shaving off some of its South Boston real estate holdings in 2019, when it sold 6 acres of parking lots at 244-284 A St. to developer Related Beal, which received approval for the 1.1 million-square-foot Channelside mixed-use development, which was approved in October 2022.

Manufacturing will cease in South Boston within three years, the Globe reported.

Gillette spokeswoman Kara Buckley said the company has not decided whether to retain any of the existing campus.

“Our top priority is ensuring we have sufficient space for our current and future development needs – and we are currently exploring a range of possibilities for this.   We will also participate in a community process which will help inform a longer-term development plan for the site.  We envision this process will take quite some time to complete,” Buckley said in a statement.

In a statement, Boston Planning & Development Agency Director Arthur Jemison said the city’s goals for the Gillette property include affordable housing, open space and resiliency infrastructure.

“We are pleased that through collaboration, Gillette is reinvesting in Boston and maintaining its headquarters and strong presence in the city. We see their expansion of manufacturing off-site as a major opportunity to reimagine how their property can better serve South Boston and the City long term,” Jemison stated.
