Greentown Labs, the clean technology incubator based in Somerville, will expand to Western Massachusetts with a satellite office of its manufacturing initiative in Springfield, its CEO announced Friday at the Statehouse.

The new site, to be located at the Springfield Technical Park and partially funded by the Davis Foundation, will “serve as a connection point for both startups in Springfield and the Boston area with manufacturers in the Pioneer Valley and beyond” as a way to spread economic vitality more broadly, Greentown CEO Dr. Emily Reichert said.

Reichert announced the expansion with House Speaker Robert DeLeo at a forum organized by the Bay State Business Link, a business-focused collaboration between DeLeo and the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce.

The Bay State Business Link was established to spur business-to-business collaboration, and identify opportunities for small and new businesses to connect with established, Boston-based companies. The program aims to get companies to “work in tandem and create relationships that are mutually-beneficial,” DeLeo said.

“Extending the circle of prosperity from Boston to Springfield to the Berkshires has been a priority of the House for years now,” he said. “Long before it became sort of politically fashionable to talk about regions left behind by the global economy, I have been travelling across this commonwealth in an effort to try and create additional and better-paying jobs.”

DeLeo and Reichert said they hoped Greentown’s announcement Friday would encourage other businesses to look at Western Massachusetts when they are in search of a service, product or employees so Massachusetts companies contribute to each other’s success.

“If you have a great idea in Massachusetts, you should be able to make it in Massachusetts,” Reichert said.
