Ground was recently broken for a major construction project at the Cambridge Rindge & Latin School on Broadway in Cambridge, consisting of an $84 million renovation of the existing school.

The 450,000-square-foot building will undergo exterior and interior improvements to become a modern facility that meets the high efficiency standards of the U.S. Green Building Council.

The project also includes a new roof for the school. Interior walls and the building’s shell will be preserved and re-used. The upgrades will affect classrooms, laboratories, the auditorium, the student cafeteria and kitchen.

Consigli Construction Co. Inc. of Milford will oversee the work. The project is a joint venture with J&J Contractors Inc. of Lowell. HMFH Architects Inc. of Cambridge will provide architectural services and TMP Consulting Engineers Inc. of Boston will oversee the M/E/P components of the project.
