Workers Credit Union has thrown some side hustle into its latest holiday initiative.

The $1.7 billion-asset institution recently launched a fall and holiday partnership to raise funds for the Worcester County Food Bank. From now until Dec. 31, the credit union will give the Worcester County Food Bank $5 for every new member or account and for every download of its mobile app.

The donation is automatic and no other registration or designation is needed to participate. The donation also applies to any member, new or existing, who downloads the credit union’s mobile app.

“We are proud to make a pledge to the Worcester County Food Bank to support its mission at a critical time of year,” Doug Petersen, president and CEO of Workers Credit Union, said in a statement. “In our greater community, one in 10 of our neighbors are food insecure and we’re glad to create this program to help ease the burden this season.”

For every $1 received, Worcester County Food Bank distributes $4 worth of donated food.

“We’re so grateful to Workers Credit Union and its members, who, through their generosity, really are making a difference,” Worcester County Food Bank Executive Director Jean G. McMurray said in a statement. “Their generosity is a beautiful show of support for neighbors struggling with hunger in Fitchburg and throughout Worcester County.”
