What: Boston City Hall Plaza
Where: Government Center, Boston
Owner: City of Boston
Built: 2020-2022

New playscapes, terraces and event spaces are activating the notorious windswept urban vacancies of Boston’s City Hall Plaza.

Designed by Sasaki and completed by Shawmut Design and Construction, the two-year project transformed the 7-acre plaza with the addition of new community gathering spots and 11,000 square feet of terraces designed for public art.

Resiliency upgrades include permeable surfaces to reduce stormwater runoff and 100 new shade trees.

They Said It:

“A robust community engagement process helped us transform the plaza from a harsh outdoor environment into a new green space where all are welcome.”
