What: Economic Mobility Hub at Rindge Commons
Where: Rindge Avenue, Cambridge
Owner: Just a Start
Built: 2022-2024

A Cambridge nonprofit is occupying a new headquarters in a just-completed development that includes 24 affordable apartments, a pre-kindergarten program, biotech labs and career training programs.

The facility enables Just a Start to triple its workforce development programs at the new 6-story, 70,000-square-foot facility located across from the MBTA’s Alewife station. Just a Start, a community development corporation founded in 1968, occupies 22,000 square feet of office space.

The project doubles the capacity of Just a Start’s adult career training program to 72 students annually. A new YouthBuild solar program is located in the 2-story woodshop.

A capital campaign raised $5.6 million toward the $37 million project, which was designed by ICON Architecture and constructed by Dellbrook|JKS. Additional funding was provided by MassHousing, Massachusetts Life Sciences Center, Low Income Investment Fund, the city of Cambridge, and federal sources.

They Said It:

“The people we serve deserve a space that is state of the art, that is well designed and is well located for them to call home and move forward toward their dreams.”
— Carl Nagy-Koechlin, executive director, Just a Start
