What: UMass Chan Medical School Education and Research Building
Where: Worcester
Owner: University of Massachusetts
Built: 2021-2024

The new Education and Research Building at the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School will accelerate therapeutics research and provide workspace for 70 researchers.

Boston-based Shawmut Design and Construction topped off framing of the 9-story, 350,000-square-foot building located at the center of the Worcester campus, expanding research, education and conference capabilities for the campus’s three graduate schools. The work now proceeds to installation of the roof and the glass-and-steel-paneled curtain wall.

Designed by Architectural Resources Cambridge, the complex will include an FDA-compliant manufacturing facility for clinical trial therapeutics, research space, offices, collaboration areas and conference rooms.

Nearly 5,900 steel beams and columns form the skeleton of the building, which is scheduled to open in 2024.

They Said It:

“Never before has the definition of our purpose been so clear in a project – we’re creating a building that will contribute to extraordinary research and life-saving discoveries for generations to come.”
