Island Creek Oysters has acquired an 11-acre waterfront property in Duxbury for a new consolidated headquarters including plans for new retail and research spaces.

The move next year will enable the shellfish company to operate its hatchery, farm, distribution space and nonprofit foundation at a single location, the former Battelle Memorial Institute headquarters at 397 Washington St. The purchase price was $8 million, according to the Plymouth County Registry of Deeds.

Developer Merrill Diamond had agreed to buy the property last year for a 35-unit residential project, but failed to gain necessary rezoning at a town meeting in March, The Boston Globe reported.

The property contains several homes and 60,000 square feet of office and lab buildings. Island Creek, currently headquartered at 296 Parks St., announced today it plans to add a retail operation and potentially research and education space at the newly-acquired property.

The 22-year-old company recently expanded into Maine with opening of The Shop, a raw bar, retail shop and distribution facility in Portland’s inner Washington neighborhood. Founder Skip Bennett is a partner in the Island Creek Oyster Bar, Row 34 and Les Sablons restaurants.
