JPMorgan Chase opened its first retail branch in the city of Boston earlier this week, and it is clearly not afraid to flex its muscles.

The banking giant is offering some customers up to $600 to open a checking or savings account at the Boston branch. The Boston Business Journal first reported the story yesterday and JPMorgan spokesperson Carolyn Evert confirmed it to Banker & Tradesman.

Other large banks in the area, including Citizens Bank and Santander, have previously offered $350 or $400 promotions, but $600 is on a new level, even in the deposit-rich Boston area. Evert said not everyone is eligible for the promotion, but people can find out by going into the branch. JPMorgan Chase was previously offering the same promotion at its Dedham branch, although that deal has since expired.

The company made waves in 2018 when it announced that it would open 50 retail branches in Eastern Massachusetts, 18 of which will be open by the end of this year.

The rest of those branches expected to open in 2019 will be in Boston in neighborhoods including the South End, Roxbury, North End, Jamaica Plain and Downtown Crossing; in communities surrounding Boston including Belmont and Brookline; north of Boston in Lynnfield and Peabody and south of Boston in Quincy and Hingham.

The move is part of a broader plan by JPMorgan to expand its retail presence into 15 to 20 new markets across the U.S., opening 400 new branches, which will employ roughly 3,000 people.
