Leggat McCall Properties has revised its plans for a 710-unit apartment complex in Boston’s South End by reducing the height of the residential towers and adding more commercial space and 10 larger units designed for families.

The original proposal called for a pair of 19- and 11-story apartment buildings between East Canton and East Dedham streets, which would have exceeded zoning guidelines for the Harrison-Albany corridor. In response to public opposition at community meetings, Leggat McCall reduced the maximum height to 120 feet while proposing the addition of five floors of apartments to the existing building at 575 Albany St., according to a letter to the Boston Redevelopment Authority from Leggat McCall Executive Vice President William Gause.

The current mix of units would include 65 percent studios, with the remainder a mix of one- and two-bedrooms and at least 10 newly-added three-bedroom units. All of the units will be rentals, as required by the financing arrangement, Gause wrote.

The 34,500-square-foot Gambro building at 660 Harrison Ave., which is currently used as a dialysis center and Boston Medical Center labs, would be expanded across a parking lot to provide more commercial space. Original plans called for a park at the corner of East Dedham Street and Harrison Avenue. The revised plan retains 36 percent of the 3.1-acre site as open space.

Leggat McCall acquired the six South End parcels at 660 and 720 Harrison Ave., 575 Albany St., 100 East Canton St. and 123 East Dedham St. in a partnership with Multi-Employer Property Trust in January 2015.

A public meeting to discuss the changes will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday at the Newton Pavilion at Boston Medical Center, 88 East Newton St.
