Boston’s Custom House Tower clock is showing a blank face for the time being, but owner Marriott Vacation Club says the oversized hands will return to their longtime perch in December.

A maintenance project including restoration of the iconic clock tower generated attention on social media this week when a passer-by noticed the clock arms had been removed from all four faces.

The project was approved by the Boston Landmarks Commission in mid-2019 but delayed by COVID-19 and the bankruptcy of the original contractor selected to refabricate the clock arms, said Ed Kinney, spokesman for owner Marriott Vacation Club, which operates the historic building as a timeshare resort. Harvard-based Yankee Steeplejacks is doing the work, according to an Instagram post.

The project also includes refurbishment of the internal clock machinery and repairs to the tower caused by the elements. The reinstallation of the clock arms will take place in December, Kinney said.

Marriott converted the property into vacation rentals in the 1990s.
