U.S. Rep Stephen Lynch issued a letter to the developers of a 2 million square foot mixed use project on the site of the former South Boston Edison Plant, calling for the project to be dramatically reduced in scope. He also demanded the developers provide off-street parking for the project’s neighbors.

Hilco Residential Parnters and Redgate Capital Partners are seeking to build 1,344 residential units, over 368,000 square feet of office space, over 85,000 square feet of retail space, 344 rooms in two hotels and 5.5 acres of new public outdoor spaces on the 15-acre site on South Boston’s Reserved Channel.

Lynch’s letter was filed as part of the Boston Planning and Redevelopment Agency’s public comment process for the proposal. Lynch stated that neighbors’ concerns over potential traffic generated by the project needed to be better addressed.

“There is a palpable fear that the addition of 1,300 apartments, two hotels and 450,000 square feet of office and retail space might overwhelm the area,” he wrote. “It is fair to say that scaling back the mass of the project would be helpful.”

Lynch said a lack of parking was “the bane” of the neighborhood, and called for Hilco and Redgate to provide 120 permanent off-street parking spots for the neighborhood as part of the project.

“We are currently reviewing the feedback we received during the public meetings this fall and the comments that were submitted. We look forward to continuing to work with the city, elected officials and the South Boston community throughout this process,” Redgate principal Ralph Cox said in a statement.
