A groundbreaking ceremony was scheduled today for a 15-story, 320,000-square-foot hotel in Boston’s Seaport District.

Boston-based Intercontinental Real Estate Corp. and Wellesley-based Harbinger Development are partnering on the Marine Wharf Hotel at 660 Summer St., which will include 243 rooms under the Hampton Inn brand and 166 extended-stay Homewood Suites.

Intercontinental CEO Peter Palandjian said the growth of convention business and corporate office space in the Seaport District has laid the groundwork for the hotel boom. General Electric, Alexion Pharmaceuticals, Reebok, PTC and Cengage all recently relocated headquarters to the Seaport District.

“It wasn’t long ago that the Seaport District was not a proven concept,” Palandjian said Monday. “It went from (the convention center), Fidelity Investments to the Moakley courthouse and that was it. It’s breathtaking to see how much supply has come on and so quickly.”

Boston-based Suffolk is construction manager on the $176 million project, which is expected to be completed in early 2020.
