M&T Bank will eliminate more than 40 Massachusetts jobs after acquiring Connecticut-based People’s United Bank later this year.

Buffalo-based M&T Bank will retain 92 percent of People’s United’s Massachusetts workforce after the banks merge, with 44 jobs eliminated, according to an M&T Bank spokesperson. The job cuts will have little or no impact on customer-facing roles, the spokesperson added. People’s United has more than 60 branches in Massachusetts.

People’s United last week notified Connecticut labor officials that nearly 750 jobs in that state would be eliminated following the merger, with most of those job cuts at the bank’s Bridgeport headquarters. The Bridgeport office will become M&T Bank’s New England regional headquarters. People’s United has branches in every New England state except Rhode Island.

M&T said in a statement that the bank would retain nearly 80 percent of People’s United employees across its footprint, including branch and customer service employees.

“Last week we communicated a number of workforce reductions at People’s United as part of our continued efforts to finalize the merger,” M&T Bank said. “This step was taken to help ensure our new organization is structured in a way that provides the best quality service for our customers and communities.”

M&T added that it currently has 1,500 open jobs across its footprint, with People’s United employees affected by the merger receiving first priority when applying for these positions. The bank also said it work to allow employees who get new positions to work from their current location.

“This is not something we take lightly, and we will do everything we can to support our employees, both affected and unaffected, throughout this transition,” the statement said. “We anticipate this being a one-time shift as we work to combine the companies.”

The deal to acquire People’s United is expected to close in the fourth quarter. In a statement earlier this week, M&T Bank said most of the staff reduction would take place in 2022.
