When a Nahant man woke up early one morning this weekend to find a fire in his home, it was just the start of his problems.

Police say after Tim Lowe awoke to a fire alarm at about 1 a.m. Saturday and used a hand-held fire extinguisher to put it out, he discovered a highly intoxicated man rummaging through his house.

It turns out the intruder had allegedly started the fire.

Police told The Daily Item that Lowe, Nahant’s Department of Public Works Superintendent, subdued the man while his wife called police.

Eighteen-year-old Joshua Carreiro of Swampscott is scheduled to be arraigned Monday on charges including breaking and entering, arson and drug possession.

Police say Carreiro recognized Lowe’s house because he used to be friendly with Lowe’s son. (AP)
