Needham-based Nauset Construction has completed renovations on the Henry Willis Building in the Financial District. The newly finished space will house the Boston offices of the consulate general of Brazil.
Restoration of the 20,000-square-foot, four-story property, located at 175 Purchase St., involved demolition and removal of all interior components. The owners, 175 Purchase St. LLC, are an affiliate of Core Investments Inc.
The multi-million dollar project included reconditioning and repointing the red brick exterior façade, a new roof, gutters and leaders, a new storefront assembly and structural improvements, such as a new basement slab, two new stairwells, a new elevator and shaft and MEP system upgrades. All work met the requirements of the National Register of Historic Places and the Massachusetts Historic Commission.
"The major project challenge was preserving as many of the interior architectural features as possible – the exposed beams, the original design of the windows – to save as much of the historic character as possible," Klarens Karanxha, project architect for Khalsa Design Inc., which partnered with Nauset on the project, said in a statement.
Originally constructed in 1874 following the Great Fire of 1872, the building is part of the Gridley St. Historic District that is expected to be added to the National Register of Historic Places in early 2014.
