Tavistock Development Co. is planning to reposition a Back Bay office and retail property with a 5-story addition containing nine residential units and a new retail tenant replacing the Crate & Barrel store.

The proposed addition at 777 Boylston St. is partially cantilevered over neighboring buildings that house the Atlantic Fish Co. and Abe & Louie’s restaurant.

Designed by Elkus Manfredi Architects, the project would demolish the Crate & Barrel building – while retaining the facade – to make way for a new 8-story building. The nine residential units would span 18,600 square feet on the top three floors. Another 26,000 square feet of office space is proposed on the third through fifth floors.

The 88,000-square-foot proposal is 20,000 square feet smaller than the developer’s original proposal presented to neighborhood groups and the Boston Planning and Development Agency, Tavistock statet in a project notification form.

The buildings on the site at 761-789 Boylston St. were constructed between 1901 and 1908.
