A massive fire has gutted a commercial block in downtown Natick, destroying numerous businesses.

Firefighters began battling the blaze at 1 a.m. this morning and have so far struck nine alarms, one shy of the maximum possible, the MetroWest Daily News reported.

The building, which fronts onto Natick Common, housed the King Wok Chinese Restaurant, a Christian Science Reading room, a dance studio, a gift shop and others.

The 12,513 -square-foot, single-story building was built in 1900, according to town property records, and most recently sold in August 2018 for $2 million. The building is located in Natick’s “Downtown Mixed Use” zoning district, which allows a wide variety of commercial uses in buildings between 50 and 60 feet high, but only permits multifamily construction by special permit provided they meet affordability guidelines based on the number of units in the building.
