Brookline banned natural gas hookups for new construction and major rehabs last month, citing the need to dramatically cut the town’s carbon emissions, potentially setting off the next fad in local efforts to fight climate change. But is it a good idea?

Cooking and building heating were the biggest sources of carbon emissions, a town report found, outweighing even transportation emissions.

“Every new building constructed with fossil fuel infrastructure makes this goal harder to achieve, by lighting a new fire that will burn, on and off, for 30 years or more,” the proposal stated.
