Secretary Ben Carson, head of the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development, may be leaving his post at the end of President Donald Trump’s current term in 2020.

In an interview on the conservative television program Newsmax that aired Monday night, Carson reportedly said he was eyeing a position in the private sector, according to the Washington Post.

“I will certainly finish out this term…I would be interested in returning to the private sector because I think you have just as much influence, maybe more, there,” Carson reportedly said.

HUD Deputy Assistant Secretary of Public Affairs Raffi Williams did not answer emailed questions from Banker & Tradesman to confirm that Carson is intending to leave after 2020, instead providing a quote from Carson that stated “President Donald J. Trump hired me to do a job as the secretary of housing and urban development, and we are making tremendous progress ensuring our most vulnerable citizens are empowered with a path to self-sufficiency. I always stand ready to serve this great President and the United States of America.”

Carson’s tenure at HUD has been rocky at times, marked by a dialing back of enforcement of civil rights protections.
