Nearly half Boston renters spend more than 30 percent of their income on housing costs, according to a new report from Apartment List.

Citing U.S. Census Bureau data, the report said 24.7 percent of renter households in Boston were severely cost-burdened in 2018, while 24.9 percent are moderately burdened.

With 49.6 percent of all renters cost-burdened, Boston ranks 45th for renter cost burdens on the list of the 100 biggest metro areas in the nation. That rate is up from 48.9 percent the year before.

In total, the region has 680,747 renters making a median income of $51,804 and paying a median rent of $1,501 per month. That’s up from 661,783 renters and paying a median rent of $1,437 and making a median income of $48,940 in 2017.
