Cosmetics retailer Sephora has opened a 5,670-square-foot store at the site of a former flower shop at Boston’s Faneuil Hall Marketplace.

The transparent glass pavilion was designed by Elkus Manfredi Architects, which was hired by marketplace operator Ashkenazy Acquisition Corp. of New York to develop a master plan updating the festival-style marketplace containing 114 shops, restaurants and pubs.

“We feel that this 21st century transparent building not only highlights Sephora’s brand image, but allows the nearby historic 18th century Faneuil Hall and 19th century Quincy Market landmark buildings to shine,” Founding Principal Howard Elkus said in a statement.

Preservationists, including the late architect Jane Thompson, sought to save the greenhouse structure, which was placed under a temporary demolition delay by the Boston Landmarks Commission in 2015. The greenhouse, built in 1976, was demolished last year.

Upcoming changes to the property include bringing unique local operators to the food court and adding more outdoor programming, General Manager Joseph O’Malley recently told Banker & Tradesman.
