The full-time administrator in charge of the troubled Union Point redevelopment on the South Shore is stepping down from his post, as the Southfield Redevelopment Authority begins the search for another master developer at the 1,450-acre site.

Paul Niedzwiecki has accepted a position as vice president of strategy and government affairs for Cape Cod Healthcare, the Cape Cod Times reported. Prior to joining the SRA in 2018, Niedzwiecki had been the executive director of the Cape Cod Commission.

The SRA acts as the public overseer of the former South Weymouth Naval Air Station property in Abington, Rockland and Weymouth. The board in February removed North Carolina-based LStar Ventures as the master developer of the property, citing its failure to meet its legal obligations.

And lenders have foreclosed on parcels formerly owned by LStar that are zoned for residential and commercial development at Union Point, including 214 acres zoned for up to 8 million square feet of commercial development, and 115 acres set aside for residential development.

The SRA board of directors has indicated that it will work with the lenders on the search for a new master developer to kickstart the project, which has failed to attract significant commercial development since the air base closed in 1997.
