Streaming music service Spotify will make its Boston debut after signing an 11-year lease for 73,891 square feet at 3 Center Plaza.
The Stockholm-based media company has been looking for office space in downtown Boston for about a year. In January, Banker & Tradesman first reported Spotify’s negotiations with landlord Synergy Investments at the office and retail complex overlooking Boston City Hall Plaza.
Under terms of the March 30 lease, Spotify will occupy parts of the sixth through ninth floors at 3 Center Plaza including a possible new ninth-floor roof deck. It has a right of first offer to lease additional space on five floors at Center Plaza 2 and another seven floors at Center Plaza 3.
Designed by architects Welton Becket, Center Plaza was built as part of 1960s urban renewal projects that demolished hundreds of buildings in Scollay Square to make way for the Government Center complex. Containing 717,128 square feet of office space, it was acquired by Synergy in 2017 for $365 million.
The previous owner, Shorenstein Properties, obtained approval from the then-Boston Redevelopment Authority for a $25-million upgrade to the property including new retail facade, conference center and roof garden. Shorenstein also sought to maximize the proximity to events on City Hall Plaza, hosting VIP parties featuring live bands in vacant offices overlooking the Boston Calling festival in 2015.
In early 2017, Spotify agreed to open a 378,000-square-foot U.S. headquarters at 4 World Trade Center in New York and later exercised an option for an additional 100,000 square feet.
In 2014, Spotify acquired Somerville-based Echo Nest, a tech company that refines user playlists. Spotify currently lists 10 job openings in Boston. Spotify and Echo Nest did not respond to requests for comment.
Spotify projects first-quarter monthly active users of nearly 171 million, up 31 percent year-over-year.
