A streetwear retailer with roots in Harvard Square is testing the demand for brick-and-mortar expansion with a new Back Bay store.

Concepts’s new location 18 Newbury St. was designed by Bermeyer and built by Shawmut Design and Construction. Spanning three floors with a connected main staircase, the store includes a mezzanine with disc jockey booth and rotating collections, and a third-floor cafe and women’s boutique called VRSNL.

In 1996, Tarek Hassan founded the first Concepts store in Harvard Square. The company has since expanded to New York, Dubai and Shanghai.

“During this unprecedented time, now more than ever, we are proud to invest in a retail expression that elevates the space and our brand in a bold new way– we’ve always been risk takers and we’ll bet on ourselves every time,” Hassan said in a statement.
