Century Bancorp, the holding company of Century Bank, continued to increase commercial and industrial lending, while also reporting double-digit income growth in the third quarter of this year.

The president of Tufts University’ and the chief medical officer at Massachusetts General Hospital have been added to Century Bank’s board of directors.

Anthony P. Monaco, Tufts University president since 2011, and O’Neil Britton, MGH’s chief medical officer and senior vice president, were elected to the board of directors for the Medford-based bank and its holding company, Century Bank said in a statement.

“These new members were carefully chosen for their integrity, experience and diverse leadership backgrounds in health care and academia,” Barry R. Sloane, Century Bank chairman, president and CEO, said in the statement. “The addition of President Monaco and Dr. Britton help ensure we are equipped with the knowledge, skills and perspectives needed as the bank continues to grow. We are fortunate to have them join us.”

Monaco’s achievements include discovering the gene responsible for X-linked Duchenne muscular dystrophy and spearheading campus-wide efforts on diversity and inclusion, sexual misconduct prevention, student mental health and sustainable operations. The bank said in an SEC 8-K report that Monaco’s experience in the educational field is relevant to certain customer relationships at Century Bank, qualifying him to serve as a director. He will be on the board’s executive loan committee.

Britton, who was born in Jamaica and immigrated to New York as a teenager, became MGH’s chief medical officer in 2016. Before joining MGH, Britton was the chief health information officer for Partners Healthcare, where he was involved with an initiative to digitize electronic medical records. His experience in the healthcare field is relevant to certain customer relationships and qualifies him to serve as a director, Century Bank said in the SEC report. He will be on the board’s asset liability committee.

“President Monaco and Dr. Britton embody the values that have been the foundation of Century Bank from the start – a commitment to excellence and best practices,” Linda Sloane Kay, Vice Chair of Century Bank, said in the statement. “I know our board of directors are looking forward to utilizing their broad range of knowledge and insights.”

Monaco and Britton will receive Century Bank’s standard compensation package for non-employee directors, including an annual retainer of $20,000, $500 per holding company board meeting, $1,000 per bank board meeting and $1,000 per committee meeting.
