A pair of startup companies with MIT roots are expanding at Cummings Properties’ Boston Avenue office and lab complex in Medford.

3D printing firm Inkbit, previously located at Mass Innovation Labs in Kendall Square, expanded its 5,000-square-foot offices at 200 Boston Ave. by 1,200 square feet. Founded by MIT researchers, Inkbit received funding from Johnson & Johnson Innovation last year.

LayerBio, which is developing drug delivery mechanisms used to treat glaucoma, was one of 12 early-stage life science companies that received grants from the Massachusetts Life Science Center’s milestone achievement program in 2015. Cofounded by MIT engineering professor Paula Hammond, LayerBio was recently awarded a $1.2 million small business grant from the National Institutes of Health to support development of its glaucoma drug delivery system. The company is relocating to 1,200 square feet at 196 Boston Ave. from an incubator in Woburn.

Newmark Knight Frank’s Joseph Pearce represented both companies in leasing negotiations with Cummings Properties.
