The University of Massachusetts Boston will break ground on a $113 million academic building on Wednesday.
UMass Boston is building a new 181,000-square-foot property, known as General Academic Building No. 1 (GAB No. 1) on the northeast corner of campus, to support the university’s growing student enrollment and course offerings.
The four-story building will provide nearly 2,000 seats of general purpose classroom space, a theater, recital hall, studios, teaching labs and student lounges. GAB No. 1 will also house the school’s art, chemistry, and performing arts academic programming. It is expected to open in 2015.
GAB No. 1 is part of the school’s 25-year master plan that will include a sciences complex scheduled to open in the fall of 2014; the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate, also slated to open in 2014; and additional academic, residential, athletic and parking facilities.
