A Watertown Century 21 broker and mother of three children in the armed forces has received this year’s Greater Boston Good Neighbor Award.
Wendy Rocca is co-founder of Operation American Soldier, which sends care packages dubbed "cheer boxes" to those serving overseas.
Rocca is a real estate broker with Century 21 Commonwealth in Watertown and a member of the Greater Boston Association of Realtors.
"We were thrilled, shocked and honored to receive this award. The generosity of the Greater Boston Real Estate Board has enabled us to ship many more ‘cheer boxes’ than we thought possible," said Rocca, who was also awarded $2,500.
Rocca, a GBAR member since 1997, co-founded Operation American Soldier (OAS) with her husband, John, soon after the war on terror began. After their daughter, Tracy, was deployed in Iraq in 2002, the Roccas sent her several care packages and the idea grew.
Since 2002, OAS has shipped more than 1,000 care packages and more than 19,000 pounds of food and supplies to 500 men and women serving overseas. The Roccas have spent $14,000, mostly in postage, to ensure no solider leaves mail call empty-handed, according to a statement.
