With coronavirus cases spiking across many parts of the South and West in recent days as states come out of lockdown, America’s experience with COVID-19 appears far from over.

So far, the Northeast appears to have been spared any resurgence even as Massachusetts and its neighbors reopen their economies.

But a big question looms: Will other states’ new outbreaks work their way northward? And will California, which had an even stricter and longer lockdown than Massachusetts, wind up being a template for our near future here in the Bay State?
